I love to look at sketches. As unfettered and unfinished
statements, they reveal as much about the artist by what they leave
out as by what they contain. For me sketching has become a
passion and you will rarely find me without a sketchbook. I use
them to record poses or details I don't want to forget, to work out
compositional problems, and as a journal of physical, mental, and
spiritual places I've been.
Most of my sketches are done in
Robert Bateman sketchbooks because the paper is 110 lb. rather
than the usual 90 lb. The heavier paper can take a lot of ink
or a watercolor wash without falling apart or warping badly.
HB or 2B pencils and
Pigma Micron pens are my most frequently used tools, but I've
also used dip pens, roller ball pens, fountain pens, quills, and
branches. With dip pens I use either India or
Walnut ink.
